Nine local schools from Armagh, Aughnacloy, Dungannon, Loughgall Moy and Richhill competed in this the 4th year of the competition for the perpetual shield which aims to promote physical activity among primary school children.
The Trim Trials park is made up of a range of timber fitness apparatus from the fun ‘Chain Walk’ and ‘Swinging Steps’ to the more challenging ‘Pole Climb’ and ‘Ladder Walk’. There is also two fitness trails to suit all ages and fitness levels. Participating teams completed laps of the trails against the clock.
The competition was organised by Armagh and Dungannon Health Action Zone in partnership with Armagh City and District (ACDC) Sports Development, Southern Investing for Health Partnership and the Promoting Wellbeing Team, Southern Health and Social Care Trust.
Hardy Memorial Primary School, Richhill picked up 1st prize in this year’s competition with St Patrick’s Primary School, Armagh coming second and 3rd place going to The Cope Primary School, Loughgall.
The fastest girl in the competition was Rossa Donnelly from St Patrick’s Primary School, Armagh with Mark Johnson from Hardy Memorial, Richhill the fastest boy.
Una Cushnahan from the Armagh and Dungannon Health Action Zone which organised the challenge said: “Regular physical activity gives you more energy, reduces stress, helps weight management and can help prevent disease. Through events like this we are trying to encourage young people to develop good exercise habits at an early age. We were delighted with this year’s interest in the competition and hope that its success will continue next year.
“The Trails are a fun and cheap way for everyone to increase their physical activity so we hope that the children who participated in the challenge return again with their friends and families.”
The Trim Trails park was installed by Armagh and Dungannon Health Action Zone and Armagh City and District Council with funding from the Big Lottery.
