Belfast ‘springs into action’ with Family Friendly Fun

March has only just begun but Belfast City Centre Management is springing into action with the launch of its series of Family Friendly Fun events, supported by Belfast Strategic Partnership.

The programme of fun activities, which runs across four weekends this month, kicks off on Saturday 9 March.

With the weather improving, families and young people will be able to come into the city to enjoy a wide variety of free activities.

Puppet workshops, on-street performances, competitions, cookery demonstrations, picnics, music in the city and educational walking tours are just some of the activities which will be on offer throughout different locations and shops in Belfast.

Tom Smith, City Safe Officer who is helping to organise the event said: “We are very excited to be launching the first ever Family Fun initiative in Belfast.

“Belfast City Centre Management’s core objectives are to strive towards a city of international class.

“By working in partnership with a number of agencies from the private and public sector, we aim to develop a vibrant, multi-cultural city for those who live, work and socialise across Belfast where people feel safe.”

Tom concluded: “This event will aim to showcase Belfast to families and young people who want to enjoy a variety of affordable, family friendly activities – providing a range of amicable, warm, alcohol-free alternatives in the day and night-time economy.”

Belfast Strategic Partnership (BSP) was set up in 2011 by the Public Health Agency (PHA), Belfast City Council and Belfast Health and Social Care Trust to address the significant levels of inequality across the Belfast area. BSP is fully funding this programme of activity.

Speaking on behalf of BSP, PHA Chief Executive Dr Eddie Rooney said:  ““Working with Belfast City Centre Management has enabled us to engage with people in a fun and creative way throughout the month of March.

“This initiative has arisen from input at a drugs and alcohol workshop hosted by the Belfast Strategic Partnership. One of the key priorities raised was the opportunity to provide alcohol-free alternatives for families and young people in the city centre.

“The Family Friendly initiative is complementing a range of other family based activities across the city, supported by Belfast City Council.”
