PHA supports new physical activity guidelines

The Public Health Agency (PHA) supports the Chief Medical Officer’s first UK-wide physical activity guidelines, launched today.

Dr Carolyn Harper, Director of Public Health for Northern Ireland, said: "The PHA welcomes the new guidelines which highlight the established link between physical activity levels and reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke and obesity.

“In particular the guidelines are broken down into age groups and this is the first time early years guidelines have been published as well as bespoke guidelines for older adults, encouraging a life course approach to physical activity.

“Children in Northern Ireland are becoming increasingly unfit. It is very important for children to be physically active as this can help with increased academic performance, enhance their self-esteem and contribute to positive mental health. Keeping fit will help reduce the growing problem of childhood obesity, possible chronic disease and ultimately, adult mortality.”

Dr Harper added: “Physical activity can help kids and adults maintain a healthy weight. The younger you can establish the habit of being active in your children the better, but it’s never too late to start.”
