Stopping smoking, avoiding alcohol and illicit drugs, and seeking advice about vaping or prescribed medicines can help reduce the risk of pregnancy complications and improve outcomes for both you and your baby.

Smoking and vaping in pregnancy
Smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, premature birth, stillbirth, and low birth weight.
If you are pregnant and smoke, switching completely from smoking to vaping is less harmful than continuing to smoke, but vaping is not risk-free and should only be used as a stop smoking aid.

Alcohol and drugs in pregnancy
There is no known safe level of alcohol to drink during pregnancy. The safest option is not to drink alcohol at any stage of pregnancy or when planning a pregnancy.
Using illegal drugs or misusing prescription medicines during pregnancy can affect both you and your baby's health. If you need support with drug use or have concerns about your medication, speak to your midwife, GP or healthcare professional as soon as possible. Help and support are available without judgement.
