Mental health strategy - Public mental health action plan

Recognising that mental ill health is one of the most significant challenges facing our society and public services, the Department of Health launched the Mental Health Strategy 2021–2031 in June 2021.

The Strategy outlines 35 key actions across three core themes:

  • Theme one:  Promoting mental wellbeing – supporting good mental health, resilience, and wellbeing throughout society
  • Theme two: Providing the right support at the right time – ensuring timely access to appropriate services
  • Theme three: Developing new ways of working – transforming how mental health services are designed and delivered

The Public Health Agency leads a cross departmental and cross sectoral approach to delivery of Actions 1 and 2 under Theme 1 of the Strategy.

The Public Mental Health Action Plan has been developed to outline the key areas of work to be taken forward from 2026-2029.
