As pupils return to school, The Daily Mile is back in action and Strandtown Primary School is leading the way! Pupils stepped outside for 15 minutes of fun, fresh air, and physical activity, joined by Parkrun world record holder Nick Griggs in celebration of the school’s commitment to daily movement.

The Daily Mile is a simple yet powerful initiative that helps improve children’s physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. Every day, pupils run, jog, wheel, or walk at their own pace for 15 minutes, covering roughly a mile – all while enjoying time with friends outdoors.

Nick Griggs joined pupils at Strandtown Primary to champion the school’s dedication to regular physical activity and inspire young people to embrace movement as part of their daily routine.

David Tumilty, Health Improvement Manager at the Public Health Agency (PHA), said: “The Daily Mile is about so much more than exercise – it’s about helping children feel healthier, happier, and more focused in class. It’s easy to implement and brings lasting benefits for both physical and mental health. Strandtown is a fantastic example of how this simple initiative can make a real difference.”

Since its launch in 2012, The Daily Mile has grown into a global movement, with over five million children taking part worldwide. With no need for special equipment, kit, or training, it’s a sustainable activity that fits seamlessly into the school day. Children participate in their school uniforms and return to class more alert and ready to learn.

Victoria Hutchinson, Principal of Strandtown Primary School, added: “The Daily Mile supports our pupils’ physical, social, and emotional wellbeing. It provides a valuable break in the school day, helping children reset and refocus. It’s embedded in every classroom and is an essential tool for promoting wellbeing across the school.”

David added: “The PHA encourages families and schools across Northern Ireland to get involved in The Daily Mile. Introducing children to an active lifestyle early on helps build healthy habits that last a lifetime.”
