suicide

This leaflet provides brief information on sources of support following an unexpected death, including the HSC Bereavement Network and the Bereaved by Suicide support services in each Trust.

This guidance is for communities, groups and schools who have lost someone they know to suspected suicide.

This guidance is for families bereaved by suspected suicide who, while remembering their loved one, would like advice on reducing the impact of memorials on other vulnerable people in their community.

The purpose of this booklet is to provide practical guidance and emotional support following a possible death by suicide. It considers the range of feelings and reactions that may be experienced following an unexpected death, and offers advice on how to cope in the immediate aftermath of a bereavement and in the weeks, months and years following. It examines the issues that may arise for people with a particular relationship to the person who has died, and also provides guidance on how to support someone who has been bereaved.

These publications provide advice for people who have been asked to speak in public about their personal experiences of self-harm, suicide or other mental health issues, and the organisations that may be supporting them.

The Guide to speaking publicly is aimed at individuals considering an invitation to speak. It aims to help them think through whether now is the right time for them to share their experience and, if they choose to do so, it provides them with some useful tips on how to proceed.

This leaflet contains information on what you can say and do to help someone who may be thinking of suicide.

It highlights the warning signs, explains the feelings a suicidal person can have and provides a step-by-step guide to having a conversation and helping someone you’re worried about.

It also lists a number of support services for people having suicidal thoughts.

These standards will apply to all organisations providing mental & emotional wellbeing and suicide prevention services which are funded by the PHA.

These five directories list the organisations that offer services to help improve mental health and emotional wellbeing. Where possible, additional information has also been provided, such as websites or email addresses and contact details within each Health and Social Care Trust area.

The Minister for Health, Social Services and Public Safety, Mr Edwin Poots MLA, asked Department officials and the Public Health Agency to organise a workshop to support the implementation of the Protect Life Strategy and to consider what further action is needed in order to tackle the high level of suicides and self harm in Northern Ireland.

The resulting report from the event is attached below.

In November 2010, the Public Health Agency commissioned Social Market Research (www.socialmarketresearch.co.uk) to undertake a formative evaluation of the pilot 'One Stop Shop' (OSS) Programme. This report presents the outcomes from this evaluation as well as recommendations to support the further development of the programme beyond the pilot period.
