Meningococcal Septicaemia - Ballycastle

Public Health Agency was informed at the weekend of the very sudden and tragic death of an eighteen year old male from Ballycastle. His most likely cause of death was Meningococcal Septicaemia.

All appropriate public health actions have been taken and prophylactic medication has been organised for close contacts.

Although Meningococcal Septicaemia is not particularly common in 16-24 year olds, all young people in this age group, particularly those just returning to universities, should be aware of its signs and symptoms. These may include severe headache, dislike of bright lights, vomiting, neck stiffness, non-blanching rash and drowsiness. Should anyone develop any of these they should contact their GP or local A&E department immediately. Students and young people should also watch out for these signs and symptoms in their friends.
