The Open Championship: Tee Off to Better Health

As The 153rd Open Championship returns to Royal Portrush, the Public Health Agency (PHA) is encouraging everyone to use this world-class sporting event as inspiration to get active and take positive steps toward a healthier lifestyle.
Regular physical activity offers a wide range of physical and mental health benefits. It can help to boost your mood, improve sleep quality, enhance self-confidence and reduce anxiety. Being active also supports a healthy weight and can help prevent and manage chronic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and dementia.
David Tumilty, Health Improvement Manager at the PHA, said: “Having The Open in Northern Ireland shines a light on one of our greatest health assets – access to physical activity right on our doorstep. We’re encouraging people to use this moment as a prompt to think about their own activity levels.
“Whether The Open inspires you to try golf for the first time or simply encourages you to walk more each day – every little bit of activity adds up. Getting active doesn’t have to be complicated but it does make a difference and contributes to better health and wellbeing.”
Even watching golf can be a great form of exercise with golf spectators walking between 5-6 miles on average and burning more than 1,000 calories every day they’re on the course. Walking is one of the simplest ways to stay active — and you don’t need to be at The Open to take part.
Community walks will be taking place across Northern Ireland during The Open week, supported by HSC Walking for Health Coordinators. Join in to get moving, reach your step goal and find out more at www.pha.site/WalkingGroups
The PHA is also supporting The Open’s official ‘Walk to Win’ challenge, encouraging participants to walk 7,381 steps in a day – matching the total yardage of the Royal Portrush course. The challenge is open to everyone, even those not attending the event — for a chance to win an amazing prize of a four-ball round at the iconic club.
Dr Andrew Murray, Public Health Consultant and Medical & Scientific Adviser for The R&A, said:
“Being active and staying active is one of the most powerful things you can do for your health. It boosts productivity, enhances mental wellbeing, supports physical fitness and can even extend your life.Whether it’s walking, cycling or playing golf, making time for movement is worth it."
"Golf and walking are often overlooked as forms of exercise, yet they are accessible, low-impact activities that deliver lasting benefits. Golf, in particular, not only supports physical fitness but also mental wellbeing and social connection – all of which are key ingredients for a healthier, happier life.”
From world-class competition on the course to simple walks in your community – now’s the time to tee off to better health.
