Tuberculosis (TB) on the rise in Northern Ireland

Tuberculosis (TB) has increased in Northern Ireland in recent years. Ahead of World TB Day on 24 March, the Public Health Agency (PHA) has released the latest figures which show that in 2014 in Northern Ireland there were 97* cases of TB reported. This is a significant increase (31%) from the previous year when 74 cases were reported and highlights that TB remains an important global and local public health problem.

Incredible Years programme changing lives

A year ago, Lisburn mum of three Amanda Portis was unemployed and facing some difficulties with her children. That was until she discovered an innovative parenting support programme to help her and her family. “My son, who is now seven years old, started having difficulties in school and I was worried about how this would affect him. He was then invited to join the ‘Dina School’ through the Incredible Years Programme in Largymore Primary School and I was offered a placement on the parenting programme,” Amanda said.

The dos and don’ts of viewing the solar eclipse

On Friday 20 March a solar eclipse will take place, blocking out about 90% of the sun, putting much of the UK into the shadows. For many, this will be the first time they have witnessed such a phenomenon, the last time being 15 years ago. It is expected to be a spectacular sight – but it also has the potential to cause blindness. The Public Health Agency (PHA) and the Health and Social Care Board (HSCB) are urging everyone to exercise caution and are highlighting the dangers of looking directly at the sun during the eclipse.

Art and health – Older people in full bloom

A stunning exhibition of contemporary artwork by older people opened this week at the Ulster Hall in Belfast. ‘In Full Bloom’ showcases art by older people from throughout Northern Ireland who have had the opportunity to explore and experiment with different art forms as part of the Public Health Agency (PHA) and Arts Care ‘Here and Now’ festival of arts for older people. The festival aims to enhance the health and wellbeing of older people by supporting them to access and participate in high quality arts activity.
