Each year, millions of infections could be prevented through ensuring good hand hygiene, therefore the Public Health Agency (PHA) is taking this message into frequently visited public places and is reminding the public to ‘clean your hands’ on the World Health Organisation’s ‘Save Lives: Clean Your Hands’ day. Sun Awareness Week— know your skin type
The Public Health Agency (PHA) and Cancer Focus Northern Ireland warned today (May 6), at the start of Sun Awareness Week, that half the population is unaware of their own skin type, which may affect their behaviour and put them at risk of cancer. New research from the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) shows that 50% of the UK population thinks that their skin is darker than it actually is, which may mean they don’t take enough care in the sun.
AAA event highlights need for men to get tested
Research shows that men are approximately six times more likely to have an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) than women and that the chance of having an aneurysm increases with age – at the age of 65, about 1 in every 40 men will have an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

A new booklet which dispels a number of myths about alcohol, drugs and older people has been published. The 20-page booklet ‘Alcohol, drugs and older people’ has been produced by the Public Health Agency (PHA) in partnership with the Belfast Health Development Unit (BHDU), Addiction NI and Drink Think. Alcohol and drugs misuse amongst older people is often hidden and the booklet is aimed at those who are worried about their intake.

May bank holiday campers: be aware of CO barbecue poisoning risk
Although summer has not arrived yet, this weekend is the May bank holiday and the start of camping season. The Public Health Agency, (PHA), is reminding people of the danger of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning from leaving lit or smouldering barbecues inside tents or caravans. Many people are already aware that fossil fuels and wood, when burnt without enough oxygen, create high levels of CO. However, the PHA is concerned that campers may not be aware of the risks involved with taking lit or smouldering barbecues inside tents, awnings or caravans.
