Northern Ireland’s new HIV and STI figures on the rise

The Public Health Agency (PHA) is marking World Aids Day (Dec 1) by publishing the ‘HIV and STI surveillance in Northern Ireland 2011’ report, which highlights the that number of new HIV diagnoses in Northern Ireland rose by 20%, from 66 in 2009 to 79 in 2010. It is clear from the report’s findings (of most recent figures, 2010), that there is still a challenge to reduce the rates of infection for HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).

The PHA Corporate Business Plan 2011-2012 is based on the four core goals and the common themes from the Corporate Strategy 2011-2015 and sets out a corporate picture of how the goals will be taken forward in year one (2011-2012) in line with existing AMT and board direction.

The Bamford review of mental health and learning disabilities identified the need for research to help with service and policy development in a number of areas. We worked with key stakeholders, gaining significant input from service users and carers along with professionals and researchers, to agree five top priorities.

This report presents the epidemiological data for tuberculosis cases reported in Northern Ireland from 1 January 2008 to 31 December 2008.
