Bowel cancer screening programme milestones reached

Around 150,000 life-saving bowel cancer screening test kits have been issued and over 100 cancers have been detected in Northern Ireland since the launch of the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme in April 2010. Bowel cancer is the second most common cancer in Northern Ireland and claims the lives of 400 local people each year*, but when detected at a very early stage there is a 90% successful treatment rate.

Too many children and young people are living in circumstances that make it difficult for them to thrive. That is the key message from the third Annual Report of the Director of Public Health (DPH) for Northern Ireland, which was published on 14th June 2012. This significant report highlights the many public health challenges that affect people in Northern Ireland.

Measles outbreak prompts PHA to issue vaccination warning

The Public Health Agency (PHA) is warning parents of the importance of protecting their children against measles following an outbreak of the infectious disease in the Republic of Ireland. Families are being urged to get their children fully immunised with two doses of MMR before travelling during to other countries, including the Republic of Ireland and other European destinations during the summer holidays.

This book provides information on many aspects of pregnancy and a list of useful organisations. It is given to expectant mothers resident in Northern Ireland through primary care services (antenatal clinics, GPs or health visitors).

Patient Experience is a recognised component of high quality care¹. Within the six Health and Social Care Trusts, there is a comprehensive programme of work in place to support the implementation of the Patient and Client Experience standards. Trusts are required to submit quarterly progress reports to the Public Health Agency (PHA) and Health and Social Care Board (HSCB). This report sets out the key findings and highlights the key actions arising from the findings. 

Men’s Health Week – trust your instincts!

The Public Health Agency (PHA) is highlighting Men’s Health Week 2012 (11 – 17 June) as an ideal time for men to focus on their own health and wellbeing, getting themselves checked out or looking for help and support, if necessary. The theme for the all-island Men’s Health Week is 'First Instinct', encouraging men and boys to seek help and support in times of difficulty or trouble. According to the Men’s Health Forum in Ireland, men (north and south) experience a disproportionate burden of ill-health and die too young:

Transplant athlete carries Olympic Torch for Organ Donation

As the 2012, Olympic Torch makes its way across Northern Ireland, the Public Health Agency (PHA) will be cheering on Orla Smyth, local transplant athlete, one of the fortunate few selected to carry the flame on part of its journey, today (at 4.18pm) from the Hillsborough Old Road (near The Close) to Ryanscourt . Orla will represent transplant recipients, those on the transplant waiting list and donor families.

PHA awards Derry~Londonderry Healthy Workplace to Woodvale Construction

Dr Eddie Rooney, Chief Executive, Public Health Agency (PHA) presented the ‘Healthy Workplace Award’ to Woodvale Construction, tonight (1 June), at the gala Derry~Londonderry Business Awards 2012, at the City Hotel, Derry. The ‘Healthy Workplace Award’ category, sponsored by PHA, was one of fifteen Business Awards being presented to leading businesses from the Derry area. The Awards were organised by the Londonderry Chamber of Commerce, City Centre Initiative and principal sponsor Money Exchange.
