PHA celebrates rise in organ donor figures

Figures released today (Thursday 23 June) show there are now over 495,000 people in Northern Ireland signed up to the NHS Organ Donor Register. The Public Health Agency (PHA) welcomes this new total, which now represents 28% of the population. Across the UK, the Organ Donor Register has reached a record 18 million, with all areas showing an increase in people signing up. However, with almost 300 people in Northern Ireland currently waiting for a transplant and not enough organs available, the PHA is urging more people to join the Organ Donor Register.

Closing date for consultation on Personal and Public Involvement strategy

The Public Health Agency and Health and Social Care Board have now developed a joint Personal and Public Involvement (PPI) Strategy after extensive engagement and discussion.  The Strategy has been approved by both organisations and is now being formally consulted on during the period 23rd June 2011 to 15th September 2011.

Responses should be returned by 4.00pm today.

‘New Life Garden’ Opens In Ards

Issued by Ards Borough Council A garden dedicated to recognising the gift of life provided by organ donation has opened in Newtownards, exactly six months after the first sod was cut. Created by Ards Borough Council, the ‘New Life Garden’ has been developed in partnership with the Northern Ireland Transplant Forum, contributing to a national drive to recognise the gift of life provided by organ donors and their families.

Belfast helps celebrate National Breastfeeding Awareness Week

To mark the start of National Breastfeeding Awareness Week (NBAW), the Public Health Agency (PHA) hosted a breastfeeding event at Groundwork, Duncairn Gardens, on Monday 20 June. This event highlighted the importance of peer support and breastfeeding support groups operating across Northern Ireland. Peer support is mother-to-mother support given by women who have breastfed their own children and who, after specialised training, provide support to other women who also breastfeed.
