There are an estimated 69,000 adults and 1092 children living with diabetes in Northern Ireland in 2010. The number of adults with diabetes in Northern Ireland has increased by 34% since 2004. Many of these cases are preventable and related to obesity.
Consultation launched on Community Development Strategy - your views matter
Issued jointly by the Health and Social Care Board and Public Health Agency The Health and Social Care Board and the Public Health Agency have today launched, for public consultation, a new Community Development Strategy. The consultation period will run for 12 weeks from Friday 10 June until Friday 2 September 2011. The Board and Agency want to see strong, resilient communities where everyone has good health and wellbeing, places where people look out for each other and have community pride in where they live.

Many popular holiday destinations are experiencing outbreaks of measles. These include France, Spain, Turkey, Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands. England has also seen a recent rise in cases, so the message from the Public Health Agency (PHA) is, if you are travelling outside Northern Ireland, make sure your family are protected.
Latest PHA update on large outbreak of E. coli in Germany – important advice for travellers
The Public Health Agency (PHA) is continuing to monitor the international outbreak of E. coli 0104 (VTEC). The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated this is a new strain of the E. coli bacteria which has resulted in a serious complication affecting the kidneys called haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS). To date there has been no reported cases in Northern Ireland.

PHA update on large outbreak of E. coli in Germany – Important advice for travellers
An outbreak of E. coli linked to salad vegetables is being reported across Europe. The World Health Organization has said this is being caused by a completely new strain of bacteria. Cases of haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) in Germany have risen to 470, with nine reported deaths. German authorities have also reported 1,064 cases of bloody diarrhoea caused by E. coli 0104 (VTEC) bacteria, with four deaths, bringing the total number of official reported deaths in Germany associated with this outbreak to 13.
Stroke campaign television and radio advertising begins
The PHA's stroke campaign launch took place on Thursday 2 June 2011 at PHA Headquarters, Ormeau Avenue, Belfast. The F.A.S.T. public information campaign includes TV and radio advertising starting 3 June 2011, running until 14 July 2011, and will re-run again in September 2011.

The Public Health Agency (PHA) is launching the F.A.S.T. public information campaign on Thursday 2 June 2011 to raise awareness of stroke signs and symptoms, and what to do if you think someone is having a stroke. The F.A.S.T. campaign is designed to inform the public about F.A.S.T. – Face, Arm, Speech, and Time to call 999.
